Public Transit in Open-World Games: A Missed Opportunity?

So, I was just wandering through Night City in Cyberpunk 2077 the other night, and it struck me how incredible the world feels until you need to get somewhere without stealing a car or calling a cab. It got me thinking about GTA and other massive open-world titles. They build these sprawling, dense environments, but the public transit often feels like an afterthought. You might get a scripted tram ride or a barely-functional subway, but it rarely feels like a living, breathing part of the city you can genuinely use to explore.

I’m curious what others think. Does the absence of a meaningful bus or train network break the immersion for you? I love getting lost in these virtual worlds, but sometimes the travel mechanics make them feel less like places and more like levels. What if you could just hop on a bus, watch the city go by, and maybe overhear some ambient NPC conversations? Would that add to the experience, or is it just unnecessary padding? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
