Managing freelance soil science work alongside food security project demands

Freelancing in soil science has been incredibly rewarding, but I’m finding the rhythm of it tricky to sync with the often urgent, shifting nature of food security projects. One month might be steady lab analysis, and the next, a client needs a full field assessment with a tight turnaround due to a regional supply issue. It keeps things interesting, but I sometimes struggle to plan my workload or even take on new clients without overcommitting. For those of you who consult in similar fields, how do you handle the unpredictability? Do you have strategies for setting boundaries or structuring contracts to accommodate last-minute demands without burning out? I’d love to hear what’s worked in balancing that need for flexibility with maintaining a sustainable practice.
