Juggling freelance soil science work with the ups and downs of food security projects

I work as a freelancer in soil science, and a lot of my projects are tied to food security initiatives. While the work is incredibly meaningful, the nature of these projects can be a real rollercoaster funding gets delayed, client priorities shift overnight, and fieldwork schedules are at the mercy of the weather.

For those of you who freelance in similar fields, how do you handle that unpredictability? Do you have strategies for smoothing out your income when project timelines stretch or contracts get postponed? I’m also curious about setting boundaries with clients whose demands can become quite urgent. How do you communicate realistic timelines without jeopardizing the relationship, especially when the end goal is something as vital as improving food systems? Any insights from your own balancing acts would be really welcome.
