Figuring Out Those Mysterious Engine Noises

Okay, I’ll admit it I’ve spent way too much time with my head under the hood trying to track down a weird tick or knock. My first move is usually the classic long screwdriver pressed against different spots on the block with the handle to my ear. It’s surprisingly effective for isolating where a sound is coming from. But sometimes that just tells you the general area, not the exact culprit. For anything more elusive, I’ve had decent luck using a mechanic’s stethoscope with the probe removed, just listening through the tube to pinpoint noises in tight spaces like around the valvetrain or accessories. What’s your secret method when the usual tricks don’t cut it? I’m always looking for new ways to diagnose those head-scratchers.
