Digital Friends vs. In-Person Coworkers: Where's the Real Connection?

Working in robotics, my days are pretty structured and filled with face-to-face collaboration. But my personal time is often spent deep in crypto Twitter and sound editing forums, where I’ve built some solid online friendships. It’s got me wondering about the nature of these connections.

On one hand, my crypto pals get the niche excitement over a new protocol or a market shift in a way my coworkers just don’t. We share a very specific passion. The conversations can be incredibly meaningful and supportive, even if we’ve never met.

But there’s something about sharing physical space with my team the casual coffee chats, the unspoken understanding during a tough debug session that feels fundamentally different. It’s a layer of shared experience that’s hard to replicate digitally.

So I’m curious: for those of you with strong online communities, do those friendships ever feel as tangible or significant as the ones with people you see in person every day? How do you balance the value of both?
