Why Do Clients Think "Exposure" Pays My Bills?

I’ve had a few clients lately offer me “exposure” in place of actual payment for web development work. It’s got me wondering is this a genuine lack of understanding about what it takes to run a business, or is there something more intentional going on? From a psychology perspective, are people just unaware of the value of skilled labor, or is offering exposure a subtle way to test boundaries? I’d love to hear your thoughts or if you’ve found a respectful way to steer these conversations toward fair compensation.
