Task Batching for Creative Work: Does It Help or Hinder?

I’m an urban designer, so my days are a mix of structured planning and bursts of creative problem-solving. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with task batching to manage my workflow, grouping similar administrative or research tasks together. It’s been efficient, but it got me thinking about the creative side.

In music, over-rehearsing a phrase can sometimes squeeze the life out of it. I’m wondering if the same principle applies to creative projects. When you batch creative work like dedicating a block solely to sketching concepts or writing does it help you build momentum, or does that imposed structure start to stifle the spontaneous connections and ideas that often come from a more scattered, in-the-moment process?

For those who work in creative fields, how do you balance the need for focused productivity with preserving that essential spark of spontaneity? Have you found batching useful, or do you prefer a more fluid approach?
