Solo vs. Group Cycling: Where Does the Real Confidence Come From?

I spend a lot of time on my bike, both alone for hours and with a local club. It’s got me wondering about where that sense of personal strength really comes from. When you’re out there solo, tackling a big climb or navigating an unfamiliar route, there’s a unique kind of self-reliance you develop. You solve problems on your own and push through the mental barriers with no one else to rely on.

But then, there’s something totally different about a group ride. Sharing the effort on a long pull into the wind or encouraging each other up a steep grade creates a different type of resilience. It feels more communal, like you’re part of something bigger.

So I’m curious for those of you who ride, do you find that deep, lasting confidence is forged more in those quiet, solitary miles, or does it come from the shared struggles and camaraderie of riding with others? I’d love to hear what your experiences have been.
