I spend a lot of time on my bike, both for work and fun, and I’ve been mulling over where that sense of confidence on the road really comes from. When I’m out there alone, covering a big distance, it feels like a very personal test. You’re the only one making the decisions, pushing through the wall, and solving problems like a flat tire with no one else around. That self-reliance has to count for something, right?
But then, joining a group ride is a completely different beast. There’s a shared energy, and tackling a tough climb or a fast pace line together creates a different kind of bond and assurance. It feels less about just enduring and more about syncing up and trusting others.
So I’m curious for those of you who ride a lot, where do you feel you’ve built the most lasting confidence? Is it from those solitary miles where you only have yourself to rely on, or does it come more from the camaraderie and shared challenges of riding with others? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you.
