Filmmaking and Meaning: Do We Create or Just Reflect?

Lately, I’ve been wrestling with something as a filmmaker. When I’m behind the camera, am I crafting meaning from the chaos around me, or am I just holding up a mirror to it? There’s this tension between wanting to tell stories that resonate and feeling like I’m just capturing the randomness of life.

I’d love to hear from others how do you approach this balance? Do you go into a project with a clear message, or do you let the meaning emerge as you work? And for those outside filmmaking, does art feel more intentional or observational to you?

(Also, if anyone else here brews their own coffee, I’m always looking for tips somehow pulling the perfect shot feels as elusive as nailing the perfect scene.)
