Explaining Offside to Someone Who Thinks EBITDA Is a Sports Stat

Okay, I need some help here. I’ve got a friend who’s brilliant at breaking down fermentation processes (my usual jam) but gets totally lost when it comes to sports. The other day, I tried explaining the offside rule, and they stared at me like I was describing EBITDA. Which, to them, might as well be a soccer term.

How would you simplify offside for someone who’s more at home with balance sheets than balance drills? I’m aiming for clarity without drowning in analogies though if there’s a yoga pose that somehow mirrors offside, I’m all ears. What’s worked for you when explaining tricky concepts to people outside their usual zone?

Maybe compare it to timing in fermentation? Like, if a player’s ahead too early, it’s offside just like adding yeast at the wrong step.
