Connecting with Clients Through Shared Hobbies
I work as a broadcast technician, and a lot of my networking happens at industry events. But the most interesting client I ever landed came from a completely different place the trailhead of a local hiking route. I was gearing up for a weekend trek when I got chatting with another hiker about the best portable power banks for longer trips. We ended up talking tech for the entire first mile.
Turns out, he ran a small production company that was struggling with some persistent audio sync issues in their live streams. Since we’d already built a rapport over shared gear talk and trail conditions, he felt comfortable asking for my opinion. I offered a few troubleshooting tips right there, and he followed up the next week to bring me on for a proper consult. That casual trail conversation turned into a steady contract.
Has anyone else found a client or a big opportunity just by chatting about a niche interest outside of work? I’m curious how common this is and if you have tips for nurturing those accidental connections.
