A simple marketing tactic that really boosted my side project

I run a small web development service on the side, and for the longest time, I struggled to get consistent clients. I tried a few different things, but what finally started working was something incredibly straightforward: I began offering a free, 15-minute website audit.

Instead of just saying “I build websites,” I’d reach out to local small businesses or post in community groups offering to take a quick look at their site and give them three actionable tips to improve speed or user experience. No strings attached, no sales pitch during the call just genuine, helpful advice.

It completely changed the conversation. People were grateful for the free value, and it built instant trust. More often than not, they’d realize how much more help they needed and would ask about my paid services. It felt less like marketing and more like just starting a helpful conversation.

Has anyone else found success with a similar low-pressure offer? I’m curious if this approach works outside of service-based fields.
